π¨ CSPD IS NOW USING AI TO ANSWER NON-EMERGENCY CALLS
Colorado Springs Police Department has officially launched an AI-assisted system in its Public Safety Communications Center.
The AI agent, called S.A.R.A.H., was developed by Axon and will now be the first to answer non-emergency calls. CSPD began testing the technology in April.
So what does it do?
π Answers and helps triage non-emergency calls
π Transcribes conversations and identifies important details
π Can transcribe calls in dozens of languages
π Creates summaries of calls
π Helps determine where non-emergency calls should be routed
CSPD says more than half of the calls received by its communications center are non-emergency calls. The idea is to let the AI handle some of that workload so human call takers can spend more time dealing with emergencies and potentially reduce 911 answer times.
One important distinction: trained human call takers will continue answering 911 calls. The AI answers the non-emergency line first, and CSPD says callers who want to speak with a person will still have that option. The AI technology is also being used to assist human call takers with 911 calls.
This could be a useful way to free up dispatchers for real emergenciesβbut it also raises some interesting questions.
π€ How comfortable are you talking to AI when calling the police?
π What information does the AI retain, and for how long?
π€ How quickly can you get transferred to a real person?
β οΈ And what happens if AI misunderstands a situation that turns out to be more serious than the caller initially realizes?
Technology in public safety isn’t going away. The important part is knowing how it’s being used and what safeguards are in place.
What do you thinkβgood use of AI, or would you rather have a human answer every police call?
